EU does not put forward requirements for competitive selection

Deputy Prime Minister for Eurointegration Vsevolod Chentsov reported that the EU has no requirements for Ukraine to adopt a law on holding a competition for the post of Prosecutor General. According to him, such provisions are not included in the official requirements of the European Union.

“The EU requirements do not provide for this. There is also no such European practice. We have recommendations from Council of Europe experts, which emphasise the need to comply with the Constitution of Ukraine, where the role of the President and the Verkhovna Rada in this process is clearly defined. Personally, I see neither the necessity nor the possibility of holding a competition for this position,” Chentsov stated.

Position of MP Buzhansky

MP from the Servant of the People faction, Buzhansky, claims that the demand to hold such a competition does not come from Europe, but from grant-funded activists who seek to seize control over the prosecution and parliament.

“Everything we see in this situation, and it is not just about the Prosecutor General, is an attempt by a small but very aggressive group of activists and their MPs to establish control over the Office of the Prosecutor General, and through it, over the Verkhovna Rada as a whole. It is precisely to prevent such attempts of a raiding seizure of power that the Constitution clearly stipulates the mechanism for appointing the Prosecutor General,” Buzhansky writes.
