Gambling business shows interest in digital legacy of social projects
Offshore operators of gambling platforms are systematically acquiring internet addresses that previously belonged to charitable foundations, educational initiatives, and political campaigns. The main purpose of these purchases is to place casino and bookmaker advertisements, as well as to effectively promote gambling content in search engine results. This strategy relies on leveraging the domain's history and the presence of backlinks from authoritative sources.
Results of domain market analysis
Data on this trend is contained in a study by the company Backlinking.com. Specialists analysed 3,692 domain sales transactions where the registration fee was at least 3,000 US dollars. The total value of these transactions reached 22.3 million dollars.
During the review, experts found that 448 domains (approximately 12% of the total sample) hosted websites related to casinos and betting. It is worth noting that this statistic did not include cases where old addresses simply redirected users to other gambling platforms.
Specific examples of website purpose changes
One striking case is the domain of the educational project Project Britain. This resource informed schoolchildren about British culture for 18 years. After being sold for 96,000 dollars, the site began displaying rankings of offshore casinos targeted at players from the United Kingdom.
A similar fate befell the domain of the Vote Leave campaign, which lobbied for Britain's exit from the European Union. It was purchased for 46,000 dollars. Just seven weeks later, the page published a list of casinos not included in the GamStop self-exclusion system.
Another example concerns the former website of the charitable organisation Vulval Pain Society. After a change of ownership for the sum of 32,000 dollars, the resource was transformed into a catalogue of offshore bookmakers offering services to residents of Texas.
Reasons for the popularity of such domains among operators
The interest of gambling operators in these assets is explained by their long-term historical background and the presence of external backlinks. In particular, many of these sites have links from government portals and educational institutions. This provides new owners with advantages when promoting gambling content in search engines.
Dynamics of changes in the market
During a follow-up audit conducted one month after the main analysis, researchers recorded an increase in the number of domains with gambling content from 448 to 485. Meanwhile, the authors of the study emphasise that their analysis covered only domains sold at auctions for a price of 3,000 dollars or more, so these data do not reflect the full picture of the market.
