Discussion on relocating border crossing points

Moldova has put forward an initiative to relocate Ukrainian border crossing points to Moldovan territory. This decision aims to reduce risks for Ukrainian border guards and customs officers working in areas where Russian attacks have been recorded.

This was stated by Moldovan Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nikitin on the Moldova 1 television channel.

Withdrawal of personnel from the Ukrainian side

According to the minister, against the backdrop of increasing intensity of Russian strikes near the Moldovan border, the authorities have already withdrawn their border guard and customs staff from four crossing points previously located on Ukrainian territory.

Currently, Chisinau is holding negotiations with the Ukrainian side. The goal of these consultations is to organise the transfer of Ukrainian border guards to Moldova to carry out joint control at the border.

Current status and next steps

Daniela Misail-Nikitin noted that, based on agreements already reached with Ukraine, two crossing points are operating on Moldovan territory. Going forward, the country's leadership plans to assess the possibility of relocating other points, guided by the level of threat and information about previous incidents near the state border.

«Це мінімально необхідні заходи для зниження ризиків, пов’язаних із війною в Україні та нападами, що відбуваються в безпосередній близькості від державного кордону», — пояснила міністерка. (These are the minimum necessary measures to reduce risks associated with the war in Ukraine and attacks taking place in the immediate vicinity of the state border), the minister explained.
