Start of manoeuvres in the Baltic

Large-scale international military exercises began in Lithuania on 19 October. Their main objective is to practise mechanisms for countering hybrid threats. The event covers the waters of the Baltic Sea near Klaipeda and the western regions of the country.

The start of the exercises was announced by the municipal authorities of Klaipeda.

Format and participants

Lithuanian military personnel and representatives of the armed forces of NATO member states are taking part in the manoeuvres. Service members will practise interaction with state institutions and other organisations.

The exercises are scheduled to run until 30 October inclusive.

Geography and operational specifics

The exercise zones include the Klaipeda and Klaipeda District municipalities, as well as Palanga and Neringa. Part of the scenarios is being implemented directly on the water.

Service members and officers will be operating in tactical uniform, carrying firearms and other equipment. Movement is planned both on foot and by vehicle.

The manoeuvre scenarios involve the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, ships and other vessels. The use of blank ammunition and pyrotechnic devices is also planned.

Compliance with safety standards

The municipality emphasised that safety requirements, fire safety rules and environmental protection standards will be strictly observed during the exercises.
