Possible meeting of leaders in the EU capital

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar reported that a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could take place as early as next week. According to the Hungarian leader, Brussels will be the venue for the talks. He disclosed this information during an interview with the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

Budapest's position on security and minority rights

Magyar emphasised the desire to gradually restore trust between Hungary and Ukraine. At the same time, he reaffirmed key aspects of his country's foreign policy course: Budapest will not provide military aid to Kyiv and will not allow the transit of weapons through Hungarian territory.

Separately, the Prime Minister noted that an agreement on ensuring the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine has already been signed.

Energy policy and historical context

Speaking about relations with Russia, Magyar drew attention to the fact that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the start of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He recalled that the Soviet Union brutally suppressed these events, preventing the country from leaving the socialist bloc.

«Однак енергетичної залежності ми не можемо позбутися за одну ніч», — зазначив прем'єр-міністр. (However, we cannot get rid of energy dependence overnight, the Prime Minister noted.)

In his words, Hungary needs to overcome this dependence and find new sources of energy, but this transition process will take time.
