Dynamics of the front line around the city
Over the past month, the situation on the Dobropillia axis in Donetsk Oblast has changed significantly. According to data from the Ukrainian project DeepState, between 25 September and 25 October, the zone of active combat expanded considerably. Maps recorded the advance of the Russian control zone north of Rodynske, specifically in the areas of Bilitske, Matyashove, and Nove Donbasu.
The grey zone, indicating locations of fierce fighting, has approached the eastern, western, and southern outskirts of Dobropillia. Movement of enemy units west of the city, near the village of the same name, has also been recorded. This indicates that the threat to Dobropillia is forming not only from the south and east, but also from the western flank.
Different versions regarding infiltration into the city
Ukrainian military observers hold different views on the current state of affairs. Some experts claim that Russian assault groups have already breached directly into the city and are conducting combat operations within its boundaries. However, on the DeepState map as of 25 October, the territory of Dobropillia itself is not yet marked as a zone of active combat.
Position of Ukrainian troops on the ground
A Ukrainian soldier with the callsign Muchnoyi reported that enemy units had been repeatedly detected in the area of the "Dobropillska" mine. According to him, the Russian side is using this territory as a stronghold for further offensive operations. The enemy is also attempting to advance through the Nove Donbasu area to bypass Dobropillia from the west towards Svyatohorivka.
«Загроза полягає не лише в безпосередньому тиску на міську забудову, а й у спробах противника поступово охоплювати місто з різних напрямків», — зазначив Мучной. (The threat lies not only in direct pressure on the urban area, but also in the enemy's attempts to gradually encircle the city from different directions, Muchnoyi noted.)
He warns that the expansion of Russian military presence on the flanks could significantly complicate the defence of the city.
Kostiantyn Mashovets' analysis
Ukrainian military analyst Kostiantyn Mashovets previously described in detail the situation regarding the infiltration of Russian units. According to his data, the enemy reached the immediate approaches to the city from the east, south-east, and south, while individual groups entered its boundaries.
Mashovets pointed to the presence of Russian infantry in the southern part of Dobropillia, specifically in the area of the "Perspektyva" vegetable base, the "Ivushka" store, and Bohdan Khmelnytsky Street. According to his information, some groups even reached the areas of the central library and the hospital, which are located north of the railway.
On the eastern flank, according to the analyst's assessment, Russian units penetrated the areas of Hannivka, Stepa, Vilne, and Nove Donbasu. To the south, they occupied Matyashove and were advancing towards other settlements on the approaches to the city.
Scale of advance and overall assessment
At the same time, Mashovets emphasises that this primarily concerns the infiltration of small assault groups, rather than full-fledged control over the respective territories. In his assessment, the main Russian forces continue fighting on the approaches to Dobropillia, and large enemy units have not yet entered the city.
In general, over two months of fighting on this axis, Russian troops advanced an average of 11–12 km. The situation around Dobropillia remains difficult: the enemy is attempting to intensify pressure from several directions. However, the scale of infiltration into the urban area and the degree of control over individual districts remain a subject of debate among military observers.
