Decision to repeal restrictions

The Hungarian parliament has voted to repeal the regulatory act that previously prohibited the promotion of LGBT themes among minors. This change was supported by the current parliamentary majority, which belongs to the Tisza party led by Peter Magyar.

History of adoption and content of the repealed law

The law, which has now been repealed, was adopted in 2021 by the majority of the Fidesz party under the leadership of Viktor Orban. The document established a ban on the "depiction or promotion of homosexuality and transgenderism". The scope of these restrictions covered the fields of education, mass media, and the organisation of public events.

According to the text of the repealed act, any depiction or promotion of themes related to homosexuality and gender change in materials intended for persons under the age of 18 was prohibited.

Restrictions on the media industry

In addition to general prohibitions, the law established specific rules for the media. Content featuring LGBT characters or relevant plotlines (films, series, advertising clips) could not be broadcast during daytime television hours. The screening of such materials was permitted only at night, provided that an "18+" age rating was present.
