According to the verdict, the incident occurred on 28 September 2025 in the yard of the defendant's residence. The man grabbed his mixed-breed dog, pulled a plastic cable tie around its neck, and secured the loose end to the garage door. He then left the animal hanging, observing its suffering for approximately five minutes until the dog died.
The autopsy report confirmed that the cause of the animal's death was asphyxia, i.e. strangulation.
During the court hearing, the defendant fully admitted his guilt, described the circumstances of the incident in detail, and expressed remorse. The court considered these actions as mitigating circumstances. At the same time, no aggravating factors were established.
Additionally, the court took into account that the man had not previously been held criminally liable and is currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The court found the man guilty of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which punishes cruel treatment of vertebrate animals resulting in their death.
The defendant was sentenced to two years of imprisonment. However, he was released from serving this sentence with a probation period of two years.
The verdict may be appealed within 30 days of its pronouncement.
