Attempt to change presidential strategy
Efforts have intensified among pro-Ukraine Republicans to persuade Donald Trump to review his approach to Russia. Politicians are seeking ways to convince the head of state to change course. The main cause of dissatisfaction has been several decisions by the administration: the easing of sanctions pressure on Moscow, agreements on the purchase of Russian diesel fuel, and potential restrictions on military support for Kyiv.
Easing of restrictions and Congressional reaction
The US administration announced a six-month easing of sanctions related to purchases of Russian diesel. In addition, the US president temporarily refrained from implementing sanction measures provided for by a law recently passed by Congress. These steps have drawn criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans.
Risks to the legislative agenda
Some lawmakers warn that further rapprochement between the administration and Moscow could complicate the advancement of the White House's legislative initiatives. Republican Congressman Don Bacon stated that the administration's agenda would be at risk if it continued to act in favour of Russia rather than Ukraine.
Another Republican, Brian Fitzpatrick, emphasised that the US must ensure Ukraine is provided with all necessary defensive equipment. In his words, sanctions against the Russian regime need to be strengthened, not weakened.
Disputes over technologies and weapons
< p>Separate concerns in Congress are raised by reports of possible restrictions on the operation of Starlink and Starshield satellite systems, which Ukrainian military uses, among other things, to counter Russian drones. Some US lawmakers are demanding an investigation into the possible restriction of Ukraine's access to satellite services. They fear that such decisions would weaken Ukrainian defence against the backdrop of Russian attacks.
Delays in the supply of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems to Ukraine are also causing concern among many Republicans.
President's position and criticism of concessions
Trump explains his decisions by his desire to reach a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. He states that he does not want to take steps that could push Moscow away from negotiations.
Meanwhile, dissatisfaction with this approach is growing among Republicans. Some of them insist that concessions to the Kremlin will not contribute to ending the war, but will only strengthen the position of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
