Preparations for potential staff withdrawal

The US State Department is preparing to order the departure of some employees and their family members from diplomatic missions in the Persian Gulf region. According to Reuters, citing three US officials, this initiative is driven by the threat of renewed hostilities.

According to the agency, this primarily refers to the potential evacuation of the entire staff of the US embassy in Saudi Arabia, along with the diplomats' relatives.

Causes of escalating tensions

Two of Reuters' sources noted that the decision is linked to the risk of new clashes, including possible attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

On Wednesday, the US embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert. The document noted the likelihood of new Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabian territory following recent deadly attacks, including a shelling of Riyadh airport.
