Tehran has clearly outlined the conditions under which diplomatic contact with Washington can be resumed. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasised the need to lift the naval blockade.

Demands on Washington

According to Araghchi, Iran is ready to give diplomacy a chance if there is substantial evidence of the US's sincere desire to reach a fair and dignified solution for the final resolution of the confrontation. The minister also called on Washington to return to the memorandum of understanding signed in June this year, which soon lost its validity.

«Якщо вони дотримаються цих умов, то мають знати, що протока буде повністю відкрита, а після цього ми проведемо наступні раунди переговорів, доки не буде досягнуто остаточної угоди», – заявив Арагчі. (If they comply with these conditions, they should know that the strait will be fully open, and after that we will hold further rounds of negotiations until a final agreement is reached, Araghchi said.)

Under the terms of the June agreement, Iran committed to opening the Strait of Hormuz, while the US was to lift the naval blockade, unfreeze Iranian oil funds, and cancel sanctions. Previously, in an interview with Iraqi media, Araghchi called on Washington to honour these obligations.

US reaction and market consequences

According to Bloomberg data, Washington currently shows no readiness to return to the June memorandum. Following its collapse, the US intensified economic pressure on Tehran, focusing on the Iranian nuclear programme, which led to increased divergences between the parties.

On Wednesday, the price of Brent crude oil exceeded the $110 per barrel mark amid attacks on vessels and disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
