Researchers studied the reaction of extreme metal fans to gruesome images
Psychologists examined how heavy music fans react to images that may evoke fear or disgust.
The study involved 148 people. Participants were shown photographs with gruesome themes, images of diseases, as well as album covers in the extreme metal genre.
During the experiment, researchers recorded differences in participants' reactions depending on their musical preferences. Metal fans demonstrated a lower level of disgust towards the presented images. Some of them also rated part of the gruesome content as funny.
Researchers suggested that for fans of extreme metal, such images may be perceived primarily as an element of entertainment and musical culture, rather than as a signal of a real threat.
The authors of the study noted that the obtained results relate to the reactions of participants specifically under the conditions of the conducted experiment.
