Rising anxiety over government ethics

According to the results of a poll conducted by the Financial Times (FT) and the company Focaldata, the level of anxiety among American voters over potential corruption in the administration of President Donald Trump has reached 69%. This figure covers registered voters. It is worth noting that nearly 50% of respondents who supported Trump in the 2024 elections also expressed concern about ethical breaches in the White House.

Nearly half of the study participants believe that the level of corruption under the current president is higher than under his predecessors. Public outrage is intensifying against the backdrop of worsening economic problems.

Economic pressure and the war with Iran

One of the key factors fuelling dissatisfaction is inflation, with the war with Iran cited as its main driving mechanism. Due to this conflict, the price of diesel fuel has risen by 70% compared to the previous year, reaching a level of $6.32 per gallon.

The financial situation of most citizens is deteriorating: 56% of those surveyed reported a decline in their well-being since the beginning of the year. More than a quarter of respondents are forced to cut spending on basic needs, such as food and medical services.

Cryptocurrency income and accusations

Against the backdrop of the population's financial difficulties, there is a sharp reaction to information about the president's family income. According to data, the Trump family has earned at least $1 billion from cryptocurrency projects, while donors associated with them receive government contracts.

Jeremy Neigh, a professor at Columbia Business School, comments on this situation as follows:

"Коли родина читає статтю про президентські прибутки від криптовалют одночасно з вирішенням, чи варто їм відкладати дорогий візит до лікаря, вони бачать, що система працює для когось - просто не для них". ("When a family reads an article about presidential profits from cryptocurrencies while deciding whether they should postpone an expensive doctor's visit, they see that the system works for someone - just not for them".)

White House position and election prospects

The White House rejects the accusations, insisting that the administration's actions are aimed exclusively at protecting citizens' interests. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle stated:

"Конфлікту інтересів не було, і Трамп діє лише в найкращих інтересах американської громадськості - саме тому його переважною більшістю голосів переобрали на цю посаду". ("There was no conflict of interest, and Trump acts only in the best interests of the American public - which is why he was re-elected to this position by a majority of votes".)

He added that the administration had launched a large-scale fight against fraud in federal agencies, while Democrats in Congress, according to him, refuse to stop the waste.

The issue of corruption and the high cost of living is becoming central ahead of the midterm elections. More than 40% of respondents noted that rising prices force them to vote for Democrats. The Republican Party fears that Trump's low approval rating and the consequences of introducing high tariffs will hinder them from retaining control of Congress.

Study methodology

The Focaldata poll was conducted from 16 to 18 October among 1,648 registered voters. The sampling error is 2.8%.

As is known, ahead of the US congressional elections, Donald Trump intensified pressure on Ukraine, using threats, as well as restrictions on the provision of intelligence data and access to the Starlink system.
