Amazon will not build office in New York

As reported by the company “Dom Stroy”, which performs foundation work in Kyiv: https://dom-stroy.kiev.ua/fundamentnye-raboty/, the largest online platform, Amazon, has abandoned plans to build an office in New York.

The brand was pushed into this step by a scandal with local authorities and activists. The retailer faced serious criticism.

Amazon’s official position

Amazon’s management had been deliberating for a long time regarding the New York office, which was to be located on Long Island in Queens. However, it subsequently abandoned plans to build the premises. An official representative of the brand disseminated this information.

According to official data, several local politicians made it clear to the management of the online platform that they are against the company’s presence in New York and will take appropriate measures. Moreover, the retailer was hinted that they would not cooperate with it on projects planned for implementation on Long Island.

According to news outlets, after the announcement of the construction of a headquarters in New York, local residents took to the streets. In their opinion, the placement of the Amazon office could have a negative impact on taxpayers and the district as a whole, worsening the transport situation, causing real estate prices and rental costs to soar. This is how events unfolded in Seattle, where the company’s first headquarters was opened.

City authorities, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, do not share the position of a number of politicians. He advocated for the placement of the headquarters in the city. This would have allowed the creation of no fewer than 25,000 jobs. Municipal authorities were even ready to provide Amazon with incentives worth $13 billion. 

However, this caused outrage among trade union organisations and the legislative assembly. Many are convinced that the platform has already ensured its creator – Jeff Bezos – a multi-billion-dollar fortune, and tax relief will only increase his capital, while bringing nothing good to ordinary people and the brand’s personnel.

It is worth remembering that, to date, Bezos is the richest person in the world.
