Gays allowed to study to become priests

The Italian Bishops' Conference (CIE) has introduced new rules allowing gay men to study for the priesthood in Roman Catholic seminaries, provided they observe celibacy — the commitment to remain unmarried. 

This decision runs counter to the views of Pope Francis, who previously spoke against admitting gay men to seminaries, fearing they might lead a double life.

The CIE statement emphasises that the preparation of priests should not be reduced to a single aspect of sexual orientation. It is important that candidates are capable of accepting chastity as a gift and freely choose and live in celibacy, demonstrating responsibility in doing so.

Furthermore, despite respect for homosexual people, the statement notes that sexually active gay men cannot be admitted to seminaries or other religious orders of the Catholic Church.
