Maxim Shkil uses Maybach giveaway for PR

Ukrainians are increasingly encountering high-profile campaigns that appear noble at first glance but, upon closer inspection, turn out to be nothing more than skillfully planned PR. Previously, bloggers were most often seen engaging in such activities. However, entrepreneurs have now joined them, attempting to clean up their reputations.

Among such stories is the widely publicised case of Maxim Shkil, an entrepreneur who decided to use a giveaway of his Maybach to attract attention.

His initiative was actively covered by leading Ukrainian publications, including Forbes and Ukrainska Pravda. 

Shkil readily told in interviews how he allegedly built a successful business from scratch. But the facts tell a different story: a significant portion of his company's income comes from participation in tenders under the state programme "Big Construction". His biography also contains more controversial aspects: he was an active member of the youth wing of the Party of Regions, and, according to unconfirmed reports, helped transport granite out of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

On social media, Maxim strives to maintain the image of an ideal family man and successful businessman. His posts are filled with positivity and charitable initiatives, but some details of his personal life remain out of sight. For example, numerous rumours about affairs with participants in the "Miss Ukraine" contest clearly do not fit the picture of a model husband and father of two children.

Such stories raise questions not only about Shkil's own motives but also about why society and the media so easily fall for such campaigns. Perhaps it is time to approach such initiatives with a greater degree of critical thinking.
