Explosions heard overnight in Engels

A series of powerful explosions occurred in the Engels area, Saratov region (Russian Federation), in the early hours of 8 January, reportedly as a result of an aerial attack using drones. Shortly afterwards, a major fire broke out, likely at an oil depot.

The information was provided by Saratov region Governor Roman Busargin, as well as from Russian Telegram channels. According to a government representative, the region faced a threat from UAVs, and air defence forces and assets were deployed.

The governor later stated that several drones had allegedly been shot down. «Обломки упали на промышленный объект в Энгельсе. На месте работают пожарные и экстренные службы» (Debris fell on an industrial facility in Engels. Firefighters and emergency services are working at the scene), he wrote on social media.

Meanwhile, the Shot Telegram channel reported that city residents heard between five and 12 powerful explosions, though it later clarified that there were around 40. A bright glow from the fire was also reported.

The Mash Telegram channel published footage of a drone flying towards Engels. According to their information, drone debris caused the fire at the oil facility.

The Exilenova+ channel also confirmed reports of a fire at an oil depot in Engels, publishing footage from the scene. Photos and videos capturing the aftermath of this overnight «бавовны» (drone attack) are circulating online.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities, as always, report that everything was successfully shot down. The fire was caused by falling debris.
