Panama appeals to the UN

The Panamanian government has lodged an official complaint with the United Nations regarding former US President Donald Trump's statements about his intention to establish control over the Panama Canal. This was reported by the French publication Le Figaro.

In the text of the official appeal, Panama's permanent mission expressed deep concern over the remarks made during Trump's inaugural address. The statement emphasises that such declarations threaten Panama's sovereignty and create international tension.

The document includes a request to convey Panama's position to the members of the UN Security Council. Representatives of the country emphasise that the Panama Canal is a strategically important international facility under Panamanian jurisdiction, and any attempts to revise its existing status will have serious diplomatic consequences.

The Panama Canal, which plays a key role in global trade, remains a subject of close attention by leading world powers. Since the transfer of control of the canal from the US to Panama in 1999, its status has been repeatedly discussed on the international stage.

Trump's statements about a possible return of control over the canal have drawn criticism both within the US and abroad.
