Panama Canal to remain under Panama's control

Control of the Panama Canal will continue to remain in Panama's hands, and discussions about its transfer to the United States are unfounded.

This was stated by the head of the UN's International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez, in an interview with AFP.

"Everything is perfectly clear here: there are no preconditions for serious negotiations on this matter. The transfer of the canal to the authorities of Panama was enshrined in agreements signed back in 1977. Since then, the country has successfully managed this key shipping route and will continue to do so," Dominguez emphasised.

Thus, the Panama Canal remains a strategic asset under the full control of the state, in accordance with international agreements and historical obligations.
