Today, Ukraine marks its 24th Independence Day. To celebrate the holiday, a parade was held on Maidan, and President Petro Poroshenko delivered a speech. During his ceremonial address, Poroshenko compared the so-called Novorossiya to Tolkien's Mordor.

“Україна була, є і буде. А Новоросія - це Толкієнівський міф під назвою Мордор” (Ukraine was, is, and will be. And Novorossiya is a Tolkien myth called Mordor), the President of Ukraine stated.

His remarks provoked a fierce reaction on social media among separatists and their Russian supporters.
