Republicans draft bill to purchase Greenland

A group of Trump-backed Republicans introduced a bill in the US Congress proposing the "purchase of Greenland". According to the document, published on Monday, its authors intend to secure the support of members of the House of Representatives.

The bill, titled the "Make Greenland Great Again Act", already has 10 co-sponsors. It stipulates that after reaching an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark on the acquisition of Greenland, the President must submit the agreement to the relevant Congressional committees within five business days, including all accompanying documents and materials.

Following the 5 November 2024 elections, Republicans secured a slim majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. If this bill is passed, Donald Trump will be able to begin negotiations on the acquisition of Greenland immediately after taking office on 20 January 2025.

Republican representatives emphasise the importance of this step, deeming it necessary to strengthen the US position on the world stage, although the proposal continues to spark debate and criticism both domestically and abroad.
