Romania and Bulgaria officially join the Schengen area

From 1 January, Romania and Bulgaria became full members of the Schengen area, marking the abolition of routine border checks at their land borders with other European Union countries. This step concluded the transitional period during which checks remained in place.

Ceremonial opening of borders

The significant event was marked by ceremonies at key border crossing points. Particular attention was drawn to the crossing between the Romanian town of Giurgiu and the Bulgarian city of Ruse. Here, the interior ministers of the two countries met to officially open up free movement across the state borders.

Representatives of local authorities, journalists, and residents of the border regions attended the events, witnessing a historic moment: border barriers and queues became a thing of the past.

What will change for travellers?

EU citizens no longer need to present passports when crossing the borders of Romania and Bulgaria. However, the publication Digi24 advises travellers to keep their identity documents on hand, as spot checks may continue for six months after the new rules take effect.

In addition, simplified crossing has become possible at the Romania-Hungary and Bulgaria-Greece borders. This will significantly improve logistics and reduce the time required for travel in the region.

The accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area strengthens the idea of free movement within the European Union. It also provides a new impetus for economic cooperation between the countries of the region, increasing tourism and business opportunities.

Experts emphasise that this step has become a symbol of the European Union's trust in the ability of both countries to ensure reliable control of external borders and meet high security standards.
