US opposes accelerated ceasefire

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concern over a potential premature ceasefire in Ukraine and a reduction in military aid to the country. 

In a joint column for The New York Times, they emphasised that such steps could exacerbate the current situation.

US primary goal is long-term peace

Blinken and Austin noted that the primary objective of the US is to achieve a durable peace that provides Ukraine with all the necessary means to deter aggression from Russia. In their view, such support is critical for Ukraine to defend its territorial integrity and prevent new attacks.

Danger of a premature ceasefire

The US officials underscored that Vladimir Putin continues to pursue the restoration of Russia's imperial ambitions. A premature ceasefire, they argued, would give the Russian army time to recover, rearm and prepare for new offensives, which could ultimately only worsen the conflict.

"This would be a peace through capitulation, which, in reality, would not be peace," they assert, adding that such an outcome would lead to further destabilisation.

Implications for security

Blinken and Austin warned that in the event of such a scenario, the US would need to increase efforts to defend against Russia and other autocratic regimes. US authorities believe that only a policy of "peace through strength" can guarantee Ukraine's survival and America's security.

Call to continue supporting Ukraine

In conclusion, they highlighted the importance of continuing support for Ukraine and the need to strengthen its position in future negotiations. Ultimately, they argue, this is what will lead to the end of Putin's war of aggression.

"The United States and its allies must continue to support Ukraine and strengthen its position to ensure security and stability in Europe in the future," Blinken and Austin stated.
