Scholz blocks additional aid to Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has suspended the adoption of a new military aid package for Ukraine, Der Spiegel reports.
According to the publication, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius proposed allocating an additional €3 billion for urgent support for Ukraine. The proposal includes deliveries of IRIS-T air defence systems, missiles for Patriot systems, howitzers, and ammunition.
Reasons for the delay in decision
However, the plan faced resistance from Scholz's chancellery. According to sources, the Chancellor believes that the current volume of aid to Ukraine is already sufficient.
In addition, the upcoming snap elections to the Bundestag, scheduled for 23 February, are cited as a likely reason for the refusal. Analysts believe Scholz may fear that new arms deliveries will provoke a negative reaction from voters, which would affect political support for his party.
