Trump adds Yemeni Houthis to list of terrorist organisations

Newly elected US President Donald Trump signed an executive order adding the Yemeni Houthi movement, known as “Ansar Allah”, to the list of foreign terrorist organisations. This decision was announced on the official White House website.

The order initiates the process of officially designating “Ansar Allah” as a terrorist group. The document notes that the actions of the Houthis pose a threat to the safety of US citizens, both military personnel and civilians, in the Middle East.

The Iran-backed group is accused of numerous attacks on US warships in the waters of the Red Sea since 2023. According to US authorities, these actions pose a direct threat to US service members.

In addition, the Houthis are accused of shelling key infrastructure facilities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Israel. More than 100 attacks on commercial vessels carried out by the Houthis have resulted in the deaths of at least four civilian sailors and forced the rerouting of some maritime shipments in the Red Sea.
