Microplastic levels in the human brain are rising rapidly

According to a study published in Nature Medicine, the concentration of microplastics in the human brain has increased by 50% since 2016.

Microplastic concentration in the body

Scientists have found that the concentration of microplastics in brain tissue is 7 to 30 times higher than in the liver and kidneys. In healthy individuals aged 45 to 50, the amount of these particles reaches 4,800 micrograms per gram of tissue, a mass comparable to that of a plastic spoon.

“Plastic in the brain”: a new reality

The authors of the study note that currently, 99.5% of brain mass consists of neuronal structures, while the remaining 0.5% comprises plastic particles.

The primary routes of microplastic entry into the human body are bottled water, packaging materials, cosmetics, and seafood.
