Widespread disruptions in digital services
Significant disruptions have been recorded in the operation of the financial sector, logistics and government online platforms in Europe. The cause was a major technical failure in Google Cloud's cloud infrastructure.
Among those affected were Revolut, Lloyds, HSBC, as well as Royal Mail and DPD. The National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom was not spared either, with its web resources experiencing intermittent operation.
Revolut customers had to deal with a number of inconveniences: they were unable to make card payments for purchases, withdraw cash or use the mobile application.
Cause of the incident
The source of the problem was a malfunction in the power supply system of one of Google's cloud regions located in London. This is why all companies using this infrastructure to support their digital products experienced failures.
On 21 October 2026, it became known that Google engineers had already resolved the malfunction. Main services have been restored, although some organisations may require additional time to fully stabilise their own systems.
Dependence on cloud providers
This incident once again clearly demonstrated the high level of dependence of banking institutions and government bodies on major cloud technology providers. A failure at a single provider is capable of simultaneously paralysing the operation of numerous services used daily by millions of people.
