The US Democratic Party may attempt to restore military and financial support for Ukraine following the midterm elections in November 2026. According to Reuters, if Democrats secure a majority in the House of Representatives and possibly in the Senate, they will gain the ability to more actively influence the foreign policy decisions of President Donald Trump.
Democratic politicians accuse Republicans of allowing the head of state to unilaterally make decisions regarding the conduct of war and control defence spending. At the same time, it is emphasised that the US Constitution assigns Congress a key role in these matters.
As noted by Reuters, the Trump administration has significantly reduced direct financial and military aid to Ukraine. His decisions to relax restrictions on Russian energy resources have also caused dissatisfaction among members of Congress.
In the event of a victory in both chambers of the legislature, Democrats will be able to initiate a new aid package for Ukraine. According to the agency's assessment, the relevant initiative could potentially receive support from two-thirds of legislators. This is the number of votes required to override a presidential veto.
Separately, Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks from New York, who may chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has introduced a bipartisan bill. Its aim is to block Trump's plan to return Russian diesel fuel to the global market.
Meanwhile, Democrats may use their budgetary powers to pressure the head of state. In particular, they are considering the possibility of cutting defence spending to force Trump to obtain Congressional approval for continuing the war against Iran.
Another area of potential change could be military aid to Israel. Democrats may attempt to limit or completely halt it. According to the material, the volume of such support amounted to $3.8 billion during the last financial year.
Meanwhile, the possible restoration of aid to Ukraine will depend on the election results, the distribution of seats in Congress, and the ability of Democrats to secure sufficient support from legislators. Victory in the elections alone does not guarantee overriding the president's veto.
