Modernisation of Russian unmanned aerial vehicle

The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine published the results of an analysis of a new sample of the Russian unmanned aerial vehicle "Gerbera-2" on 2 November. Previously, this model was used primarily as a decoy to overload air defence systems, but its design has now been significantly altered.

According to intelligence data, the new drone has acquired a significantly greater range of up to 1,200 kilometres, as well as updated electronics and the ability to transport a warhead weighing up to 25 kilograms.

Technical specifications and combat equipment

GUR experts noted changes in the geometry of the aircraft: the wingspan is 3 metres, and the fuselage length is 2.6 metres. A 63-litre fuel tank allows it to achieve the specified range.

The examined sample was found to have a 10-kilogram fragmentation-blast incendiary warhead and additional containers with an incendiary mixture. Meanwhile, according to official statements from the Russian side, the maximum weight of the warhead can reach 25 kilograms.

Electronics and foreign-made components

Intelligence paid particular attention to the electronic equipment. The "Gerbera-2" is equipped with an updated flight controller, a 12-channel "Comet" navigation system, a Chinese mesh modem, and a video signal processing unit.

The drone is also fitted with a dual IP camera designed to detect Ukrainian interceptors. Intelligence noted that modifications with other types of cameras exist. During the analysis of the design, eight components of Chinese and four of American manufacture were identified.

Threat beyond Ukraine's borders

The GUR emphasises that the increased range makes these drones a potential threat not only to Ukraine. As an example, a "Gerbera-2" with a warhead was detected on the Baltic Sea coast in Poland in mid-September 2026.

Ukrainian intelligence has posted an interactive 3D model of the new drone and detailed information about its components on the War&Sanctions portal.
