Causes of upcoming difficulties

The municipal enterprise “Kyivvodokanal” has issued a warning regarding the difficult situation with water supply during the winter period. The main factors cited as causing interruptions in resource delivery are the wear and tear of power grids, voltage instability in the network, and a shortage of staff. Despite this, the sewage system will continue to operate in normal mode.

Dependence on electricity

As stated in the notice, if electricity is absent for up to 20 hours a day in winter, water will be supplied only when power is available.

Risk of freezing pipes

In addition to outages caused by power cuts, there is a threat of indoor pipes freezing. The risk of this phenomenon increases significantly during frosts of around −10 °C.

Recommendations for residents

To minimise potential problems, Kyiv residents are advised to insulate basements in advance, check the condition of shut-off valves and the points where utilities enter the building. Those planning to travel are recommended to leave relatives with access to their apartments.
