Moscow accuses Brussels of "burying" the deal

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the United States failed to withstand pressure from European countries, as a result of which the agreements reached during the summit in Anchorage remained on paper. According to the Russian diplomat, Moscow bears no responsibility for the non-implementation of these plans.

«Наша совість чиста, не кажучи вже про те, що ми повністю прийняли пропозицію Сполучених Штатів у серпні минулого року, яку було зроблено під час саміту на Алясці» (Our conscience is clear, not to mention that we fully accepted the United States' proposal in August last year, which was made during the summit in Alaska), Lavrov emphasised.

Doubts about the trilateral format

In addition, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Washington had proposed launching a process of trilateral negotiations involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine. However, Moscow doubts the expediency of such a format for discussion.

«Ми зазначили, що за таких умов хочемо розуміти, з якими пропозиціями Зеленський направить своїх парламентерів. Для нас це дуже важливо, американська сторона з розумінням взяла до відома наші аргументи» (We stated that under such conditions we want to understand with what proposals Zelensky will send his negotiators. This is very important for us, and the American side understood and took note of our arguments), Lavrov added.

Context of the Anchorage agreements

Previously, media reports circulated a version according to which, during the meeting in Anchorage, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump agreed to end the war in Ukraine after the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas. Kyiv and European countries rejected this plan.

Later, the Kremlin stated that Trump had promised to exert pressure on the Ukrainian authorities to force them to agree to the terms of Anchorage, but did not do so.
