Plans for forming a new unit

Christian Freyding, Commander of the German Army, stated that a separate drone regiment will be deployed within the army by 2029. According to him, the unit is to achieve full operational capability by that deadline.

Structure and tasks of the companies

The new regiment will be fully oriented towards operating unmanned systems. Its structure provides for five or six companies, each performing specific functions. In particular, one company will specialise in engaging enemy targets at short range, while another will focus on deploying drones capable of operating at distances of over 500 kilometres.

In addition, the regiment will include an electronic warfare company and a counter-drone defence company. Freyding emphasised the importance of including a dedicated trials and testing company in the structure.

“And I also want us to have our own trials and testing company within the regiment’s structure, so that further development, testing, trials, and application are carried out from a single source,” the commander noted.

Integration and personnel numbers

Freyding added that unmanned systems can be deeply integrated into the existing structure of the military branches or created as an independent unit, as planned in this case.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced the initiative to create the new regiment on 1 October. The formation of the unit is expected to begin next year. Initially, the regiment will consist of 350 servicemen, with its strength planned to increase to 600 personnel later.
