Pope Leo XIV proposes talks between Russia and Ukraine leaders

Appeal to state leaders

Pope Leo XIV has once again drawn attention to the need for a peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine. While returning to the Vatican from France, the head of the Catholic Church called on the leaders of the states and governments of Russia, Ukraine, and other countries to meet in person.

«Ми повинні закликати глав держав і урядів Росії, України та інших країн зустрітися, сісти за один стіл і поговорити один з одним» (We must call on the heads of state and government of Russia, Ukraine, and other countries to meet, sit at one table, and talk to each other), the Pope emphasised.

Criticism of the military-industrial complex

Leo XIV also expressed concern over the escalation of armed conflicts and the increase in defence spending. In his words, modern wars no longer make sense, so world leaders should abandon the arms race and focus on finding solutions to problems.

«Ми витрачаємо величезні суми на цю грандіозну військову промисловість: промисловість, від якої невелика еліта отримує колосальні прибутки за рахунок розпалювання воєн. Водночас ці мільярди євро чи доларів можна було б використати для вирішення таких проблем, як голод у світі, житлова криза та безробіття» (We are spending huge sums on this grandiose military-industrial complex: an industry from which a small elite receives colossal profits by fomenting wars. Meanwhile, these billions of euros or dollars could be used to solve problems such as world hunger, the housing crisis, and unemployment), Leo XIV stated.
