Washington and Moscow have moved to the final stage of concluding an agreement providing for the release of US citizens detained in Russia. This was reported by ABC News, citing informed sources.

Progress of negotiations and their participants

According to the publication's sources, the administration of President Donald Trump has nearly reached an agreement with Russia. Negotiations are being conducted by special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, and the process is currently at the final stage.

Officials note that although the terms are gradually becoming clearer, no final agreement exists yet. There is a risk that the deal could be cancelled or significantly altered.

Key aspects of the agreement

Primary attention during the discussions was given to the fate of 72-year-old Stephen Hubbard. This former teacher took part in hostilities on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Along with him, a number of other Americans are planned to be released, whom Moscow accuses of committing crimes that raise doubts in the US administration.

Reports of a possible deal emerged against the backdrop of Steve Witkoff's planned trip to Moscow. According to one official, this visit is to take place after his meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo.

Status of detained citizens

Currently, at least eight US citizens are in custody in Russia.
