Israeli armed forces have developed a detailed plan for a large-scale military operation against Iran, but its implementation has been blocked due to warnings from Washington. According to the Financial Times, US President Donald Trump categorically opposed the start of hostilities before the US Congressional midterm elections.
Preparation for a new offensive
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on the need to resume large-scale strikes on Iranian targets. At the beginning of the current month, he ordered the military leadership to plan a new major offensive. According to sources cited by the publication, Israeli military personnel developed a scenario for a multi-day bombing campaign that was to begin on 10 October. Its intensity was planned to exceed the joint US-Israeli offensive launched in February this year.
Among the objects included in the target list were nuclear facilities, the infrastructure of the Iranian regime, and civilian infrastructure, including power plants.
Washington's position
The operation was not carried out. Sources explain this by Trump's unwillingness to resume the war before the elections scheduled for 3 November. The White House told FT that the US will not attack Iran before these elections.
At the same time, one of the publication's interlocutors allows for the possibility of resuming strikes within the coming weeks. According to him, Washington's strategy is to force Tehran to agree to the terms of a deal regarding the Strait of Hormuz and the Iranian nuclear programme.
Negotiations and internal processes
On 19 October, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Israel, where he met with Benjamin Netanyahu. According to one source, during the negotiations, the updated list of targets in Iran was presented to the American leader, to which objects of civilian infrastructure that had previously not been under attack were added.
Meanwhile, Israel is preparing for parliamentary elections scheduled for 27 October. The country's army is in a state of heightened combat readiness. Almost a week before the vote, leave for servicemen was cancelled. The Chief of the General Staff explained this by the need to ensure security during the electoral process.
Potential consequences
It is noted that a new attack could once again draw the United States and Gulf states into a military conflict, as well as contribute to rising energy prices. Trump and Netanyahu continue to publicly threaten Iran with the resumption of attacks.
