Student detained after report from lecturers

On 12 October, the District Prosecutor's Office in Lublin announced the temporary detention of 21-year-old Ukrainian citizen Yaroslav F. He is suspected of preparing the murder of a random individual motivated by racial hatred. According to the investigation, the crime was intended to be part of an online challenge called "bloody Friday".

The investigation began following a report from the administration of the Lublin Catholic University. One of the university's staff members informed law enforcement about the student's alarming statements, which were noticed by participants in a seminar. According to them, the young man made aggressive and extremist remarks.

Details of the preparation and the suspect's behaviour

During classes, Yaroslav F. boasted about crimes committed on the basis of racism. He openly declared his intention to kill random people as part of the aforementioned challenge and attempted to involve one of the female students in similar actions.

The investigation established that the man had purchased three knives: he carried one on his person, while keeping two throwing knives at home. The suspect also searched the internet for materials related to torture and inflicting pain, specifically via the Telegram messenger. These facts were confirmed by a preliminary analysis of two mobile phones and a laptop belonging to the suspect. In addition, he attempted to agree with a potential accomplice on jointly committing the murder, offering to provide him with a knife.

Prosecutor's position and potential punishment

«Задуману мету підозрюваний не досяг виключно завдяки негайній реакції керівництва вишу та рішучому втручанню поліції» (The suspect failed to achieve his intended goal solely thanks to the immediate reaction of the university administration and the decisive intervention of the police), said Marcin Kozak, a prosecutor and press secretary of the District Prosecutor's Office in Lublin.

Yaroslav F. was charged with preparing a murder motivated by circumstances deserving special condemnation, as well as motivated by racial hatred. During the interrogation, the suspect gave testimony but did not admit his guilt.

He faces a punishment of up to 15 years in prison for preparing a murder. The court's decision to detain him will allow the investigation to continue, during which investigators must establish all the circumstances of the case and verify the evidence collected.
