Escalation of street events in the Albanian capital
Sharp clashes occurred in Tirana between protest participants and law enforcement officers. According to Bloomberg, demonstrators demanding the resignation of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama used stones and set fires. In response, police deployed tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets.
Expansion of the demonstrations
Protest actions in the capital have continued for nearly two weeks. They began against the backdrop of a months-long movement opposing the construction of a luxury resort on the country's coast. On Saturday, 24 October, university lecturers, teachers, opposition politicians, and public activists joined the students, making the protest significantly more massive.
Damage and consequences of the riots
The most intense confrontations took place in Tirana's main square. Demonstrators ripped up paving stones from the sidewalks and threw them at law enforcement officers, as well as setting fire to trash bins. As a result of these events, hundreds of people were injured. Government buildings and business facilities sustained damage. According to estimates by tax authorities, losses for 127 enterprises have already reached €2.15 million.
Government position
On the eve of the actions, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated that the government is preparing measures to address issues related to the cost of living and housing. At the same time, he warned about the implementation of new security measures against those who commit violence. The head of the government also accused organised crime and external forces of exploiting the protests.
