Vending machine for abortion pills appears in Warsaw

In late September 2026, the first so-called “abortion machine” appeared in Warsaw. This automated device, similar to a standard parcel locker, allows users to collect a ready-made package containing medication for medical pregnancy termination. The equipment was installed at the Abotak premises on Wiejska Street (Wiejska 9), located near the Polish Sejm.

Medication retrieval mechanism

The process of obtaining the supplies involves several stages. First, an individual contacts the organisation Women Help Women and undergoes a mandatory online consultation. After successfully completing the procedure, the user is generated a unique PIN code.

This code is required to open the corresponding compartment in the machine where the order is stored. The project organisers emphasise that this system is designed to significantly reduce waiting times compared to international postal delivery, as well as increase privacy. They assure that clients' personal data is protected.

The Abotak space has been operational since 2025, providing informational and organisational support to individuals seeking access to medical abortion. The initiators describe the new machine as the first of its kind in the world. The main goal of the innovation is to simplify the logistics of receiving packages and reduce the number of personal contacts during the process.

The appearance of such equipment occurs against the backdrop of one of the strictest legislative regimes regarding abortion in Europe. Current Polish regulations allow legal pregnancy termination only in two cases:

• if the pregnancy poses a threat to the woman's life or health;
• if there is a justified suspicion that the pregnancy resulted from a crime (such as rape), with a limit set at 12 weeks.

The Polish Penal Code provides for liability for performing or facilitating pregnancy termination in violation of these rules.
