Circumstances of the incident

A railway accident occurred in the Lviv region. While departing from Pidzamche station, a diesel train operating on the Lviv–Sokal route collided with an electric locomotive. This was reported by Igor Zinkevych, a member of the Lviv City Council, a public activist, and the founder of “VARTA-1”.

According to the activist, the collision occurred precisely at the moment when the rolling stock on the route to Sokal began to move from the platform.

Consequences for people

People were injured as a result of the railway accident. The driver of the diesel train sustained a leg injury. Medical assistance is also being provided to four passengers who were in the train carriage.

Meanwhile, it is noted that the drivers of the electric locomotive were not injured in the collision.

Investigation

Relevant railway specialists and representatives of special services are working at the scene. Their task is to establish the exact causes and circumstances that led to the collision of the vehicles.

Context: state of railway infrastructure

This incident occurred against the backdrop of a worsening situation with traction rolling stock in Ukraine. It was previously reported that there was a critical shortage of locomotives due to Russian attacks. The railway loses an average of 37–40 units of traction rolling stock per month. In 2026 alone, approximately 310 locomotives were damaged.

As a result, Ukraine is negotiating with European partners regarding the supply of additional traction. The shortage of locomotives is already affecting export logistics, particularly the transportation of agricultural products and iron ore. Even the resumption of operations at Black Sea ports does not guarantee full-scale exports, as the delivery of cargo to the quays depends on the state of the railway network.
