Awaiting an official invitation
Ukraine has not received an invitation to the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, scheduled for December in the state of Florida. However, as President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasised, Kyiv is fully ready to participate in peace negotiations within the framework of this top-level meeting.
The head of state made these comments during a joint press conference with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, which took place in Kyiv.
Condition for participation: Washington's initiative
Zelensky noted that Ukraine's representation at the highest level depends on the decision of US President Donald Trump. If the American leader proposes such a format, the Ukrainian side will be present.
«Безумовно, якщо президент Трамп запросить у такий формат Україну, Україна буде там представлена на найвищому рівні. Будемо сподіватися, що це можливо. Поки такого сигналу ми не отримали. Розраховуємо» ("Unconditionally, if President Trump invites Ukraine to such a format, Ukraine will be represented there at the highest level. We will hope that this is possible. So far, we have not received such a signal. We are counting on it"), the president stated.
Role of the US and security guarantees
The leader emphasised that the United States has the capacity to force Russia to end the war or at least agree to a ceasefire regime. At the same time, according to Zelensky, Ukraine must receive security guarantees.
He added that reaching such agreements is possible provided international partners are involved and there is mediation by Donald Trump or American negotiators.
«І все це можливо, коли поруч є партнери. За посередництва президента Трампа або американських переговорників. І я думаю, що це можливо і можна розраховувати на зустріч у Флориді в межах саміту G20» ("And all this is possible when there are partners nearby. With the mediation of President Trump or American negotiators. And I think that this is possible and one can count on a meeting in Florida within the framework of the G20 summit"), Zelensky concluded.
