History. A Shelter and a Meal. Do Not Repeat
We are used to explosions, gunfire, booms, and bangs here. We set up basements as shelters and learn to distinguish the sounds of shots. But that is the prelude. The real story is different. In our settlement, there are wooden houses left, called "standards". They are two-storey. They were built after the war by German prisoners of war. The walls are thin, the facilities are in the yard, and the staircase is wooden and creaky. To avoid running to the yard facilities at night, people keep chamber pots (buckets) in the hallways (in the apartments). The people living there (three entrances with two apartments each) get along very well and can hear each other very clearly). Outside, near the houses, there are small sheds, canopies, and tables where everyone gathers in the evenings to play cards, drink beer, and treat each other to snacks.

Two neighbours decided to eat okroshka in the heat. The recipe was new and "very spicy". The chopped ingredients were as usual, but the dressing consisted of fermented milk whey with raisins, a glass of light beer, and sour cream.
At night, one of the neighbours who had eaten the spicy okroshka experienced fermentation and an urgent need to use the night pot. The night pot is an iron bucket. Mrs. Valya is a solid woman. I will describe everything tactfully and tolerantly.... After a gunshot that detonated in the iron bucket and echoed through the wooden house with wooden partitions, all 12 families evacuated to the street. Bombing!

There was nowhere to run. There is no shelter. Someone made a decision and jumped over the fence into the neighbour's vegetable garden. Everyone who did not jump over it simply broke the fence. They fell into the beds. They lay there. It was night. The neighbour's dog, which dared to bark, saw so many people jumping over the fence, whined, and hid in its kennel. A few minutes later, after resting, everyone started calling acquaintances and relatives to warn them about the bombing. The lights in the settlement began to go out... After lying in the garden for half an hour, the people, assessing the silence of the streets, decided to return to their apartments. They settled down. And then.... the okroshka, whey, and beer did not sit well in the second neighbour's stomach... The night pot was the same. The sound was the same. The residents' reaction was the same. The place for shelter was already familiar. They ran out of the apartments faster (they had experience by then). But... Mrs. Olya had a husband who understood the situation but was embarrassed to say it.

While they were lying in the neighbour's vegetable garden, the settlement was put on alert. The lights went out even in distant windows. Silence.... Due to stress, the okroshka in the stomachs of both women who had eaten it decided, after all, to go for a walk. Both neighbours ran together to the outdoor facilities, over the fence and through the bushes. After everyone's hearts and stomachs settled, a night meeting was held (no one was sleeping anyway), and it was decided: until the end of the ATO, the consumption of kvass, beer, whey, milk, cucumbers, and (after another neighbour's admission) red beets is prohibited in the house.

In the morning, after catching up on sleep, the men repaired the neighbour's fence and, pooling their money, decided to build a shelter: they dug a basement, concrete it, installed benches, and wired the electricity. No civilians were harmed. The neighbour's fence and garden were slightly damaged, but the dog had recovered from the stress and even started barking. © Olena Stepova
