Constitutional Court postpones review of lustration law

Today, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine reviewed the lustration law. Activists and journalists gathered outside the court building from early morning. Contrary to some expectations, the court did not risk ruling the law unconstitutional. At least, not today.

 

After deliberations, the Constitutional Court judges granted Leonid Yemts's motion to postpone the court session until the Venice Commission issues a decision on the lustration law and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine makes amendments to it.

 

According to the ruling read out by Constitutional Court Chairman Yuriy Baulin, the start date for the review has been postponed indefinitely, and further notice will be given regarding the commencement of the proceedings.

 

However, the court rejected Yemts's motion to invite to the court the people's deputies who voted for the law and former Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov, who signed it.

 

Many are inclined to view today's Constitutional Court verdict as a small but significant victory.
