Moldova sets conditions for gas supply to Transnistria

The Prime Minister of Moldova stated that a solution to the gas crisis in Transnistria could be found, among other things, through gas supplies from Gazprom, but on the condition that the Russian peacekeeping mission is replaced by a civilian one under the leadership of the United Nations.

“The peacekeeping mission must be changed. We can resolve the gas issue, but only if there are no Russian military personnel in the region,” he noted.

A response from Transnistrian representatives was not long in coming. Vadim Krasnoselsky, the so-called president of the unrecognised republic, accused Chisinau of deliberately delaying the resolution of the energy crisis for political reasons. 

He emphasised that Russia has already met all the conditions for gas supplies via Moldovagaz, and that deliveries could begin “tomorrow if needed”. However, according to him, Moldova continues to block this process.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Transnistria has only two days’ worth of gas reserves left. If supplies are not resumed in the near future, the region risks losing its heat and power supply, the restoration of which would take two to three months.
