Nadiya Savchenko faces mental health risks

Renowned pilot Nadiya Savchenko, abducted from Ukrainian territory and held in a Russian pre-trial detention centre, faces serious health risks if she does not end her hunger strike within days.

Nadiya has been on hunger strike for 58th day. Her current weight is around 60 kilograms. The woman is cheerful and relatively energetic, however, dark circles have formed under the pilot's eyes, according to witnesses, . Savchenko's hands are swollen and inflamed due to daily IV drips and skin wiping. Currently, she is receiving only glucose infusions, but fats will be added in the coming days. With such "support," a person can live for a considerable time, but her body may suffer irreversible damage.

Due to the hunger strike, Nadiya's organs may fail and the gastrointestinal tract may atrophy and various  irreversible changes may occur. In addition, the pilot will experience nerve and mental changes, which detention centre staff have repeatedly observed in people on prolonged hunger strikes.

Knowing all this, Nadiya does not intend to give up her hunger strike.

Savchenko's friends and acquaintances are calling on the international community to help secure her release from the detention centre.
