Why Trump is demanding Greenland

The shortest path for Russian missiles towards the US passes through Greenland. According to Voice of America, it is precisely this strategic factor that prompted President Donald Trump to demand the transfer of the island.

Aggressive call to the Danish Prime Minister

It is reported that on the eve Trump called the Prime Minister of Denmark with an insistent demand to hand over Greenland to the United States. The conversation was tense: the President displayed aggression and categorically insisted on the island coming under US control.

Trump justified his position by citing the need to strengthen the country's defensive potential. He emphasised that Greenland's location makes it a key point in defending against possible missile strikes from Russia.

Denmark's minimal military potential

At present, only one military base operates in Greenland, housing approximately 80 personnel. Denmark's military potential on the island is extremely limited: its defence is provided by just four ships and one aircraft. In fact, however, the US plays the leading role in ensuring the security of the territory.

Meanwhile, Russia is actively increasing its military presence in the Arctic. Russian nuclear submarines patrol Arctic waters, while joint exercises with China demonstrate Moscow's intentions to strengthen control in the region.

Greenland as a strategic asset

Greenland indeed holds key significance in geopolitical and military terms. Located between North America and Eurasia, the island allows for the control of the shortest intercontinental missile routes and significantly strengthens the US Arctic presence.
