Danish Prime Minister wants to discuss Greenland with Trump

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she had proposed a meeting with newly elected US President Donald Trump against the backdrop of his intensified statements about the intention to take control of Greenland, possibly even using force.

Frederiksen told journalists on Thursday evening after a meeting with other senior Danish officials, according to Politico.

According to the Danish Prime Minister, Trump has not yet responded to her invitation. However, she expressed confidence that the meeting would take place, emphasising that she does not expect dialogue before Trump's inauguration, which is scheduled for 20 January.

These comments came just two days after the elected US President stated that he did not rule out the use of military or economic force to seize Greenland. The idea of possible US control over the island, which was put forward by Trump even before his election, became a topic of discussion again after his victory on 5 November.

Mette Frederiksen, however, emphasised that Greenland belongs to its inhabitants and stated that she could not imagine a real attempt by the US to seize the island by force. Several European leaders also expressed the view that such statements by Trump are unacceptable.

Despite the attention to Trump's statements in world news, Frederiksen noted that there is no reason to believe that the new US President intends to invade Greenland, and added that close cooperation continues between the two countries, which are NATO allies.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, for his part, downplayed the significance of Trump's threats, emphasising: "You can take Donald Trump seriously, but not always literally." He also noted that Denmark respects Greenland's aspiration for independence.
