Czech Senate tightens citizenship rules for Russian nationals

The Senate of the Czech Republic has approved a new law that significantly complicates the process of obtaining citizenship for Russian citizens.

Renunciation of Russian citizenship is a mandatory requirement

Under the new provisions, Russians are required to officially renounce their Russian Federation citizenship to apply for Czech citizenship. This measure aims to tighten control over migration processes and ensure national security.

Suspension of applications

All current citizenship applications from Russian citizens have been suspended. The only exceptions are applicants who have been granted refugee status in the Czech Republic or who possess specific skills and knowledge of value to the state.

Support for Ukrainian refugees

The law also provides for measures to protect Ukrainian refugees, reinforcing the priority of assisting those affected by the war.
