North Korea tests cruise missiles

North Korea successfully tested strategic cruise missiles launched from a submarine platform, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Test details

The missiles travelled a distance of 1,500 kilometres, following complex trajectories, including oval and figure-eight patterns, and remained in the air for more than two hours. According to KCNA, the missiles accurately hit their designated targets. The tests were aimed at "enhancing the effectiveness of strategic deterrence against potential adversaries".

Kim Jong Un's role

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the tests. He stated that the country continues to strengthen its armed forces to ensure a stable peace and stability. In his words, the successful launches are an important step towards strengthening national security.

South Korea's reaction

South Korean military authorities confirmed the tests, reporting that several cruise missiles were launched from an inland area of North Korea towards the Yellow Sea around 16:00 on Saturday. However, they did not provide specific information on the trajectories and flight range.

Context

North Korea regularly conducts missile tests despite international sanctions and condemnation. Such actions raise concerns in the region, particularly among South Korea, Japan and the United States, which view them as a threat to security and stability.
