Usik raises Hetman Mazepa's sabre after victory over Fury

Alexander Usik, the undisputed heavyweight champion holding the WBA, WBO, WBC and IBO titles, made a symbolic gesture after his victory over Tyson Fury. On the ring, he raised the sabre that belonged to the legendary Hetman Ivan Mazepa. This act not only underscored the significance of the triumph but also reminded the world of Ukraine's struggle for freedom, which began three centuries ago.

The history of Mazepa's sabre

As Maxim Blahitnyi, director of the Chernihiv Regional Tarnovsky Historical Museum, explained, the sabre was crafted in the late 17th century and represents a unique specimen of Ukrainian arms craftsmanship, shaped by the influence of Eastern cultures. Hetman Ivan Mazepa presented it to Esaul Savych for his loyal service. Later, the relic ended up in the collection of Ukrainian antiquities owned by Vasyl Tarnovsky, and subsequently in the museum.

An inscription is engraved on the blade: "Всю надежду свою на тебя возлагаю, Матерь Божия, защити меня под покровом своим!" ("I place all my hope in you, Mother of God, protect me under your shelter!") Angels, two candles and the crowned Virgin Mary with the infant are depicted nearby. This image is known as the "Unfading Flower".

The sabre was transported to Saudi Arabia under the strict supervision of specialists, with all museum standards observed. Its appearance on the international stage marked an important step in cultural diplomacy, showcasing Ukraine's rich history and the significance of its heroes.

Usik's victory and the fight's context

In the rematch with Tyson Fury, held in Riyadh, Usik won by unanimous decision (116:112 on all scorecards). The champion successfully defended his titles, although the status of undisputed champion was not at stake this time: Usik had previously vacated the IBF title, which now belongs to Daniel Dubois.
