The head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andrii Pyshnyy, publicly denied reports of his intention to leave office. In a post on the social network Facebook, he emphasised that he had not submitted a resignation letter and continues to exercise his mandate, despite rumours of a possible dismissal initiated by certain members of parliament.

Defending institutional independence

Pyshnyy underscored that the current situation is of a fundamental nature: it concerns not only the personal fate of the head of the bank, but also the fundamental independence of the central bank. According to him, current legislation establishes a clear seven-year term for the NBU governor and an exhaustive list of grounds for the early termination of the mandate. These norms, as the official explained, were created specifically to protect the bank from political expediency.

«За останні десять років я вже четвертий голова Національного банку. На мою думку, це промовиста тенденція, яка змушує замислитися, наскільки надійно працюють передбачені законом захисні механізми в українських політичних реаліях» (Over the past ten years, I am already the fourth head of the National Bank. In my opinion, this is a telling trend that makes one reflect on how reliably the protective mechanisms provided for by law work in Ukrainian political realities), Pyshnyy noted.

Reaction to a discreditation campaign

The NBU head stated that there has been prolonged political pressure, manipulation, and a deliberate coordinated campaign to discredit his work. He believes that the current situation tests not Pyshnyy's own readiness to leave his post, but the state's ability to adhere to legislative rules and protect the independence of its institutions.

At the same time, the bank's head emphasised that he is ready to openly answer questions regarding the results of his activities, in particular to explain complex and unpopular decisions that had to be made during the full-scale war.

«Нам немає за що червоніти і є що сказати» (We have nothing to be ashamed of and we have something to say), he wrote.

Pyshnyy emphasised that the independence of the National Bank should not depend on whether certain politicians like its decisions. According to him, this is a matter not of personal guarantees for the head of the bank, but of trust in the state, its institutions, and the established rules.

«Рано чи пізно будь-яка каденція завершується, і, коли я прийму відповідне рішення, суспільство дізнається про нього безпосередньо від мене. Зі звітом і належними коментарями» (Sooner or later, any term ends, and when I make the relevant decision, society will learn about it directly from me. With a report and due comments), the head of the National Bank concluded.
